Reading List

In a recent post, I commented on my encounter with the last few pages of Stephen King’s book, On Writing. By the way, as far as writing goes – and not just writing, but tellingly straightforward composition – that book is among the best since William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White’s The Elements of Style.

But I’ll talk more about that on another day. The point here is my encounter. King gives the reader a formidable reading list on those last few pages of On Writing that could last more than one lifetime.

I found and later bought nearly one dozen, including Good Omens and Not a Country for Old Men, that have kept me stomping or laughing when I’m alone. That’s what a good book – or a movie if that’s what you prefer – should do.

As you plan your holiday, I would like you to add something to your reading list: Writing for Media and Monetising It. The content is as engaging – I restrained myself from saying sexy – as the title. It’s the story of the years that fostered my craft. It may not get you stomping your feet or cracking a rib, but it connects you to the intimacy of a journey in which you may even see your odyssey.

It does more, you see. The book also shares the experiences of other professionals across age brackets and seasons, including Nigeria’s journalism Pulitzer Prize winner, Dele Olojede.

If you need a genuinely worthwhile company this holiday, or you’re thinking of a gift to share, get a copy of the book – and read it!
